Film and Picture Library

The unique Photographic Collections of the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust contains over one million original negatives and transparencies and 7,000 film titles dating from the beginnings of the industry, in the late Nineteenth Century. These images represent the most comprehensive record of the British motor industry in the world.

Here, you can take a nostalgic trip through history of the motor industry. Classic marques such as Austin, Morris, MG, Mini, Rover, Land Rover, Triumph and Austin Healey; advertising and fashion from the roaring twenties to the swinging sixties; giants of the motor industry such as Herbert Austin, William Morris (Lord Nuffield), Alec Issigonis, Leonard Lord, Cecil Kimber and the Wilks brothers; the rich and famous including Kings and Queens both here and abroad, Margaret Thatcher, Winston Churchill, Harold Wilson and many more; and a glimpse of the British motor industry in its heyday including the bustle of the production line, behind the scenes in the offices and off-duty social activities at iconic factories such as Longbridge and Cowley.


A wide selection of original footage, from the 1930s to the 1980s, is also available on DVD through our series of Heritage Motoring Films, which can be purchased from our online shop. You can motor across Britain and the world in a classic Austin or Morris; admire the motor industry’s contribution to the war effort during two World Wars; enjoy period adverts from every decade; go rallying in Monte Carlo and many other glamorous locations; or take a Works tour round Longbridge, Cowley and Solihull during the heyday of the industry.
