Object in Focus - Quadricycle Model

Quadricycle 1

We receive many kind offers through the year to donate various objects from the British motor industry to the Museum’s permanent collection. In the last two months alone, we have accepted rally trophies, Venner parking meter movements, a commemorative plate and even a five CD changer from a Rover car!

One of the many highlights is this late 20th Century model of Henry Ford’s Quadricycle which was built in 1896.

The model of this famous vehicle, made by Franklin Mint, was gifted to the then Prime Minister, John Major, on his visit to the Bridgend Engine Plant on 14 June1996. In November 2024, it was kindly donated to the Museum by Sir John himself.

The details on the scale model showcase high accuracy of the four-horsepower, two-cylinder engine as well as the drivetrain, including the leather belt and chain. Even the location of bolts through the coachwork and the curve of the seat rails have been accurately recreated in miniature.

The model will soon be on display in Automobilia; the Museum’s accessible store showcasing thousands of motoring objects.
