J12 M40
British Motor Museum
This vehicle, based on the Bedford CF van, was an electric 'limousine' built for HRH Prince Philip who had toured the Lucas factory in November 1977 and been shown some examples of electric vehicles. Always taking an interest in new technology, Prince Philip was keen to try out his own model.
With a Lucas 40kW traction motor it could reach 50 mph and had a range of 70 miles. A rack of lead-acid batteries filled almost the entire area under the floor. The six-seater limousine was finished in a special metallic paint and leather interior.
It was ideally suited for driving around London and Buckingham Palace and Windsor, and spent several years in the Royal Mews.
