J12 M40
British Motor Museum
This car was the first to be designed from scratch for rallying and had blazing success, becoming the ultimate weapon on the field. It won the World Rally Championship titles three years in a row from 1974 – 1976. Based on the ideas of the Lamborghini Miura’s designer, Marcello Gandini, there are many similarities between the two cars: the clamshell bonnet and boot and the upswept frame of the doors.
Differences included the Stratos’ wedge-shaped body, a key 1970s design trend and famously sports a Ferrari Dino V6 engine. The Stratos fittingly won a glorious farewell at the Monza Rally on November 28, 1982, taking all three of the first three places, firmly earning its place as a rally legend.
