The first Ford Mustang was launched in 1964; it’s been in continuous production ever since and is currently on its seventh generation. Dubbed a ‘Pony car’ in the 1960s, the Mustang was the aspiration of many young Americans.
The Mustang made it across the Atlantic as personal imports for many years but finally, in 2015, Ford officially offered it in the UK and on mainland Europe - and Britain even got it in right-hand drive form!
A welcome change was the adoption of independent rear suspension instead of the antiquated leaf springs of old, but under the bonnet was a naturally aspirated, large capacity V8 connected to just the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.
The Mustang was never subtle. With a zero to sixty of just 4.7 seconds, the rumble of eight cylinders and a test in Autocar magazine reporting that, ‘Leaving roundabouts askew was all part of the fun in a ‘Stang’.
The car on display was the first UK-specification, right-hand-drive Mustang originally driven by a Ford UK senior executive.
