Girls in STEM

PrincethorpeCollege-PitStopChall-PermissionsYes-1620x1080As children return to school for a new academic year, we thought we would take a look back at one of our educational events that took place earlier this year. The first Girls in STEM Curriculum Day happened in June and saw the Museum's Learning Team host over 50 girls from various secondary schools across the West Midlands.

The Team have discovered that just 20% of the UK's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) workforce is female which then falls to just 15% when taking into account engineering roles alone. The aim of the day therefore was to encourage girls to consider STEM careers and use our amazing collection as inspiration.

The day was kicked off by a fantastic keynote speech from Louise Reynolds, Vehicle Line
Director at Jaguar Land Rover, who shared her story as a woman in STEM. Following this, the students participated in various activities such as a pit stop challenge, a Museum tour and hands on pulleys and levers workshop supported by our partners the STEM Ambassadors from MoD Kineton.

The day's finale saw a talk from the drivers from Laser Tools GB4 Racing team who answered students' questions and signed autographs. Each student also took home a STEM-themed goody bag.

Teachers from Princethorpe College commented that the experience was "informative and fun! We'll be back next year."
