Demonstrating new technology that was at the forefront of electric vehicle innovation, the all-electric E-4 Coupé concept showcased significant developments in range and power.
Supported with funding from research and development grants, Delta Motorsport applied innovative technologies to the E-4’s structure, aerodynamics and powertrain. These developments were important in showcasing how an electric vehicle could have a long range as well as high performance.
Its lightweight carbon composite structure made the E-4 incredibly fast with impressive torque and acceleration (0-60 in under 5 seconds). Its twin direct-drive electric motors were developed alongside Oxford University and YASA Motors and the batteries were placed at the bottom of the car to lower the centre of gravity. This created ideal weight distribution that generated excellent handling.
In 2016 Delta Motorsport launched a low-cost micro-turbine technology called MiTRE that extended range to 200 miles per charge and was only fitted to this car. Delta Motorsport was eventually acquired by Cosworth in 2021.
