With a background in Music and Cultural Anthropology, it may be a surprise that orchestral conductor Robin Wells moved on to found Wells Motor Cars right here in Warwickshire.
The Wells Vertige exhibits a seamless blend of musical artistry and automotive engineering. From its gear knob, formed to mimic a conductor's baton, to the styling that reflects the flow of music, the Wells Vertige was designed to provide an “experience of pure driving pleasure”.
The influence of music can be heard and seen throughout this car, from the conscious creation of the exhaust noise engineered to produce a particular low frequency sound to the subtle visual structure across its design. Robin was inspired by the architecture of a piece of music in the styling of the car; with a beginning (the precise front), a crescendo in the middle (the cabin) and an end (the sharp rear). The hand-built Vertige is a manifestation of the strong connection between music, sound, and motoring.
This car is on display as part of the Museum's feature exhibition, Beep-Beep, Yeah!: The Sounds and Songs of the Motor Car.
