This left-hand drive, short wheelbase Ford Transit was previously used as a mobile vehicle workshop to support Ford Motor Company’s Press Office activities. It was later transferred to the Ford Heritage Collection. And air compressor and various electric outputs (both 110 and 240 volts) were fitted to enable this Transit to be used in any surroundings.
First launched in 1965, diesel engines were rarely found in small and medium sized commercial vehicles. Having been originally designed for the petrol engine, the Transit ‘nose’ had to be extended to fit a larger diesel. Fuel restrictions in the 1970s made this a popular choice.
Legend has it that the Transit project (codenamed Recap) was originally to be known as the ‘V-Series’. Upon arriving for senior management review, it had a ‘Transit’ label attached and the rest is history!
Ford has maintained a sales leading position for over 40 consecutive years with the Transit, with over six million being built and sold worldwide.
