        What we're doing

        Water Management

        • Installed dual flush toilets, waterless urinals and sensor taps to reduce water usage and monitor water usage on a monthly basis.
        • Installed an in-house bottling plant to provide sparkling and still filtered water utilising reusable bottles. This process removes transportation and waste from the provision of table water.
        • The sedum roof area on our Collections building slows down roof water runoff.
        • The lakes and ponds on site are designed to act as holding tanks to collect rainwater and slowly release into the watercourse to avoid flash flooding downstream.

        Sustainable Food & Beverage Management

        • On site drinking water refill stations.
        • Local food & beverage suppliers are prioritised.
        • No endangered/protected fish or seafood is purchased (as defined by the Marine Conservation Society).
        • Fair trade tea is provided.
        • Our supplier Paddy & Scotts runs a Community Wellbeing Initiative in Kenya and our coffee sales to date have resulted in the British Motor Museum contributing the equivalent of 1688 school meals along with 2.8% of the capex required for the new roof and windows at the Ruiga School in Kenya.
        • Plant based menu options available.

        Energy Consumption

        • Installed a building management system that automatically optimises the heating and air conditioning and we closely monitor our energy use.
        • Installed LED lighting throughout the building with motion-sensitive lighting in appropriate areas as well as day light timers for external lighting.
        • Installed low energy hand dryers.
        • The main kitchen fitted with state-of-the-art low energy consumption ovens and refrigeration equipment.
        • Solar PV array panels on the Collections Centre roof, which supplies power to this already very low energy usage building.
        • Energy efficient glazing installed throughout the buildings.
        • Renewable electricity is supplied to the site.

        Waste Management

        • 100% of paper, card, glass, cans and plastic waste is recycled.
        • All food waste is collected and sent to an anaerobic facility to help generate renewable energy.
        • Used cooking oil is recycled into biofuel.
        • 80%+ of single-use plastic has been eliminated. Replacing plastic bottled drinks for cans, in the Café reduced plastic usage by 1.21 tons (46, 644 bottles) in the first 12 months.
        • Bins for recyclable materials are available in all public spaces.
        • Soaps dispensed in bulk or recyclable/refillable containers.
        • Chemical cleaning products replaced with bulk eco-friendly products.

The Museum and the Local Community

        • Offer volunteer opportunities, with a team of over 100 volunteers regularly supporting the Museum’s work.
        • Run a community outreach programme to take the Museum to those that can’t make a physical visit to the Museum, such as older people, those with additional needs or groups for whom transport costs are a barrier to visiting.
        • Recycle/upcycle equipment no longer used at the museum within the local community and schools.
