This year, HMRG are celebrating 50 years of an iconic marathon rally at the British Motor Museum!

Historic Marathon Rally Group is an unfunded and voluntary organisation run by a committee of enthusiasts who aim to reunite historic cars and their crews from the era of Marathon Rallies and Classic Car Endurance events. Their latest major Historic Marathon Rally Group event, celebrating 50 years of the 1974 UDT London - Sahara - Munich World Cup Rally, is coming to the British Motor Museum, Gaydon, on Sunday 21 April 2024. This will be an unforgettable reunion of Historic Marathon and rally cars and their crews, with all classic rally cars welcome.

The 1974 UDT London - Sahara - Munich World Cup Rally was a high adventure 11,000-mile (175,000 km) challenging marathon that crossed fourteen countries and included some of the world’s most forbidding terrain. Some crews became lost in the Algerian Sahara Desert and some almost died of thirst on this extraordinary and epic event, one of them being Stirling Moss. Just 19 cars made it to the finish, of the 52 cars that started the rally. The winning Citroen DS had a 28-hour lead over the factory-supported Peugeots that finished second, third and fourth.
The event will include a gathering of cars from this incredible 1974 Rally, (at least two of which are still owned by the original crew members). There will also be cars from other significant rallies including the 1968 and the 1977 London-Sydney Marathons, the 1970 and 1995 World Cup Rallies, the Pirelli Marathon, and others.

Indoors, Wayne Scott will be hosting Interviews and discussion with some of those who took part, including a pre-recorded interview with Jim Reddiex, the only surviving crew member from the car that won the 1974 Rally, the Citroen DS. Visitors are expected both from the UK and across Europe. On display will be an intriguing range of items from those who competed in the 1974 rally. Additional rally cars of all types are expected as part of the anniversary celebration and Marathon Rally Car Show.
